Addressing Overspeeding by Heavy Vehicles in Kathmandu
During Urgent Time (Akasmik Samaya) in the House of Representatives, I raised a road safety issue that many early morning commuters in Kathmandu face, particularly along the Karyabinayak–Nakhu route near the Ring Road. The issue was prompted by a recent near-miss involving a heavily loaded pickup vehicle and a parent travelling with a five-year-old child to school. Although no lives were lost, the incident highlighted the serious risks posed by overspeeding heavy vehicles and the need for stronger preventive measures. I acknowledged the continued efforts of Nepal Police and Nepal Traffic Police in enforcing traffic laws and creatively raising public awareness. At the same time, I urged greater monitoring and stricter enforcement against overspeeding by heavily loaded trucks and pickup vehicles, particularly during peak morning hours on the Kalebina–Nakhu route and other high-risk roads across the Kathmandu Valley. Road safety is a shared responsibility. Every commuter, every child travelling to school, and every family deserves to travel safely and with confidence.
