Drastic Reform RE: Sexual Violence

During the Zero Hour discussion on 25 August, 2026, I called for stronger legal provisions and questioned whether the existing maximum punishment for rape, particularly a life sentence that may effectively be limited to 25 years, is sufficient for the most serious offences. I also emphasized that the seriousness of a crime must be meaningfully addressed even when the accused is a minor, while recognising the need for a broader, holistic response to sexual violence. I welcomed the Government’s sensitive engagement with the victim’s family and its commitment to submit a report within seven days addressing necessary legal reforms. Such a report must go beyond increasing punishments, and address the underlying mentality behind sexual violence, strengthen the State’s response when children go missing, and establish a society where respect for human dignity and the safety of children are deeply rooted.
