To:

Federal Parliament of Nepal,

Nepal's intangible cultural heritage, including traditional knowledge, languages, performing arts, rituals, craftsmanship, and cultural practices, forms an essential part of the nation's identity. Despite its rich cultural diversity, Nepal has long lacked a dedicated legal framework to safeguard and promote this living heritage.

I welcomed Nepal's first dedicated legislation on intangible cultural heritage and highlighted the importance of creating a legal framework that protects and promotes living traditions while recognising the communities that preserve them. I also encouraged stakeholders and the public to participate in the legislative process by providing feedback on the Bill.

My Key stance regarding this issue raised are:

  1. Recognise and support the communities and practitioners who preserve living cultural traditions – as these form a significant part of Nepal’s national identity in the global context.
  2. Encourage stakeholder and public participation throughout the legislative process.
  3. Promote the documentation, transmission, and sustainable safeguarding of Nepal's intangible cultural heritage
  4. Align national efforts with international best practices for cultural heritage protection.
